Chapter 23

‘Good morning. I hope I am your first foot.’ It was New Year’s Day and Christian had just opened the back door to Robert Catto. He wore his tan leather coat, a well-worn satchel of the same colour and material slung across his chest.

‘You are.’

‘Then I wish you a very Happy New Year, Kirsty. Even if I do not possess the dark hair which is supposed to bring luck.’

‘I like your hair as it is. As you know very well.’

Leaning forward, he kissed her on the cheek. A butterfly touch. His lips bore the cold of the outside world. Yet they were warm too.

‘Happy New Year to you too. We shall have to hope it will be a happy one, anyway.’

‘It’s a new year,’ he said gently. ‘A fresh start.’

‘Aye. Did you have a busy night?’

‘Most of the drunks bouncing down the High Street were amiable. At least two told me I was their best friend.’

She laughed. ‘Funny how it takes some folk that way. Happy birthday for yesterday. I am sorry I do not have a present for you.’

‘I’m hoping to get my present from you very soon,’ he said, laughing when she blushed. Sliding his hand into his pocket, he brought out a small irregular shaped parcel wrapped in rough paper. ‘Here,’ he said, handing it to her. ‘A lump of coal. So you will always be warm throughout the year.’

‘Is that yon one at the back door?’ came Betty’s voice.

Robert Catto rolled his eyes. ‘Yon one,’ he repeated. ‘I do have a name.’

‘So does she. And it’s not the wee witch.’ Christian tugged at the sleeve of his coat. ‘Come in out of the cold.’

He kicked his feet against the doorstep to rid his shoes of any clinging dirt or ice and stepped into the back lobby. He was all height and broad shoulders and masculine vitality and he brought the small space to vibrant life.

‘Is it unlucky to come in at the back door on New Year’s Day?’

‘I dinna think so. Since I let the old year out here last night. It’s away to wherever the old year goes. I should not have thought you were superstitious. Will you take your coat off and I’ll hang it up? What’s in the satchel?’

‘Clothes for the boys,’ he said, lifting the satchel over his head. ‘A pair of breeches and a waistcoat apiece, three shirts likewise, stockings and small clothes. Not new but still with a lot of wear in them. Or so Sergeant Livingstone’s wife tells me. I asked her to get them for me and she obliged. Very speedily too. I’ll have to see about getting a pair of shoes for Geordie.’

‘They stripped him bare, didn’t they?’ She raised the back of her hand to her mouth, knowing she could be feeling only a fraction of Geordie’s humiliation at the hands of the Liddells.

Robert Catto pulled her hand down and kissed the back of it. ‘He’s safe here now. One of the men is a cobbler.
